Reed Knute Swenson guided the Weber State athletic fortunes through the school’s formative years, first as a coach then later as the Wildcats’ athletics director.

Swenson, originally from Provo, Utah, became the men’s basketball coach in 1933 and coached the Wildcats until 1957. He was the Weber State football coach from 1933 to 1936, while also serving as the school’s athletic director.

As a coach, Swenson guided the Wildcats to seven conference championships.

Swenson was one of the founders of the National Junior College Athletic Association in 1948, and served as the President of the NJCAA for 13 consecutive years.

As Weber State transitioned into a four-year institution, Swenson was a key figure in that effort and was one of the founders of the Big Sky Conference (in 1963).

Swenson Gymnasium bears his name. Swenson is also a member of the Helms Hall of Fame (1973).
