SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The Weber State University women's basketball team turned in one of its strongest all-around performances on Thursday night, but couldn't quite overcome the hot shooting of in-state rival Utah.
Despite a career-high 15 points from junior forward Shawnte Taylor, the Utes captured an 81-63 victory over the Wildcats at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
Junior forward Amanda Hughes added 12 points and sophomore guard added 11 for Weber State (0-7). Taylor and senior Mikell Woodfield each had seven rebounds to lead the Wildcats, who won the rebounding battle 34-33.
Michelle Plouffe had 21 points to lead Utah, which shot 58.9 percent from the field and committed just eight turnovers.
Utah led 47-38 at halftime after hitting 20-of-34 from the field, but Weber State kept in the game behind 12 points from Taylor and eight from sophomore guard Jordan Pfau. The Wildcats also outrebounded the Utes 17-16 in the opening 20 minutes.
Weber State returns home to the Dee Events Center on Saturday evening to face San Jose State at 5 p.m. The game will open up a double-header with the WSU men's team, which also faces the Spartans.
