'Cats fall to Bears in Big Sky home opener

The Weber State women's basketball team (4-8, 0-3) lost its conference home opener on Thursday afternoon, falling to Northern Colorado (7-6, 1-3), 68-49.
Both teams struggled mightily from the floor in the game, but especially in the first half. Weber state shot just 12.5 percent in the first half while the Bears shot 36.7 percent.
Aided by a 12-0 run late in the half, the Bears increased their halftime lead to 29-15.
Northern Colorado's shooting was better in the second half while the Wildcats continued to struggle from the floor. Weber State finished the game with a 20.7 shooting percentage. The Wildcats also shot poorly from three-point range and from the free throw line. Weber State was just 2-for-16 from beyond the arc and 23-for-35 from the stripe.
The Wildcats were led by freshman guard Deeshyra Thomas who scored 16 points. Senior forward Amanda Hughes added 11 points for the Cats.
Junior center Zakiyyah Shahid-Martin pulled in 10 rebounds to lead the Cats.
Weber State outrebounded Northern Colorado, 48-45, but the Cats did not take care of the ball well, turning it over 23 times. The Bears turned it over 20 times, but the Wildcats did not take advantage of the Northern Colorado turnovers as well as the Bears took advantage of Weber State's. Northern Colorado scored 25 points off of turnovers to Weber State's 11.
The Bears also had a strong showing in the paint offensively, outscoring the Wildcats, 26-14, in the paint.
The Bears were led by Molly Duehn who scored 18 points while Kim Lockridge added 15 points.
The Wildcats never led the game while the largest lead for Northern Colorado ballooned out to 28 points with 9:36 left in the game.
Weber State will host North Dakota on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Dee Events Center.
