OGDEN, Utah – Weber State University picked up a solid 59-52 win against the University of Northern Colorado Saturday afternoon.    

The Wildcats battled in the first half of play. The Bears went on an early 8-2 run but the Wildcats fought back and took the lead with 28 seconds left in the first half and went into halftime leading 25-22. The second half of the game Weber State maintained the lead. With 8:43 the Wildcats lead by 10 but Northern Colorado wasn't going down without a fight and brought the score within one point with three minutes left in the game. Weber State powered through and defeated the Bears 59-52.

“I thought we did a terrific job today,” Head Coach Bethann Ord said. “Our game plan was executed well and I'm really proud of these girls. We made No. Colorado work hard for their points.”

Junior Jalen Carpenter led the Wildcats with 15 points. Junior Regina Okoye also scored in double figures with 11. Freshman Jocelyn Adams and senior Carlee Lough had eight points each for the Wildcats. Adams also led the Wildcats in rebounds pulling down eight.

“We all feel really good right now,” Okoye said. “We've been working hard and learning from our losses. We didn't dig ourselves in a hole this game and we played when we needed to. We wanted this win.”

Weber State shot 46.3 percent from the field, 11.1 percent from the three and 66.7 percent from the free throw line. Weber State was outrebounded 38-34. The Bears had 15 turnovers to Weber State's 17.  

“This team is so close,” Ord said. “They are taking ownership. They are taking care of each other and keeping their composure. They are working hard and working together and it's been a huge contributing factor to the changing of our culture.”

Northern Colorado had two players in double figures, D'Shara Strange had 17 points and 11 rebounds. Kyleigh Hiser had 11 points and nine rebounds. Northern Colorado shot 30 percent from the field, 22.7 percent from the three and 68.8 percent from the free throw line.

The Wildcats are now 4-6 in Big Sky Conference and 9-12 overall on the season. Weber State will continue Big Sky play hosting Idaho State Saturday, February 7 at 2 p.m. at the Dee Events Center.
