Weber State picks up 70-51 win over Southern Utah

CEDAR CITY, Utah – Weber State women's basketball team picked up a 70-51 win over Southern Utah University with two Wildcats hitting new career highs.

"I thought we did a great job of coming out of the gates tonight," head coach Bethann Ord said. "Our press defense allowed us to set a tempo to the game, which we took advantage of.  Everyone stepped up during this road swing and we did what we had to do to win. We are excited to come back home and get to work."

Weber State started the first quarter on a 8-2 run. The lead didn't last long however as the Wildcats went on to shoot 2 of 8 and Southern Utah brought the score within one point with four minutes left in the first quarter. Weber State forced SUU to commit 11 turnovers in the first quarter which helped them have a 17-12 lead at the end of the first.

The Wildcats went through a two minute scoring drought early in the second quarter but a deep jumper by Cece Wooten ended the drought with five minutes left in the first half. Wooten's bucket started the Wildcats on an 11-0 run that gave them a 32-19 lead at half time.

With 4:17 left in the third quarter the Wildcats had a 21 point lead over the T-Birds. SUU went on a 6-0 run to bring the score to 50-35. WSU maintained for the rest of the third quarter and had a 54-40 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The start of the fourth quarter was rough for both teams as Weber State went 1-8 and Southern Utah went 1-6. Weber State managed to maintain their lead and ended the game with a 70-51 final score.

Weber State was led by Brittney Dunbar who put up a career high of 19 points. She went 6-11 from the field and 6-6 from the free throw line. Dunbar also had six assists and five steals. Freshman Emily Drake also had a new career high of 15 points.

Wooten led the Wildcats in rebounding pulling down nine on the night. Kailie Quinn also added five steals for the Wildcats.

Weber State shot 37 percent from the field, 24 percent from the three and went 17-19 from the free throw line for an 89.9 percentage. Weber State had 15 turnovers to SUU's 29. The T-Birds outrebounded the Wildcats 39-34.  SUU went 37 percent from the field, 36 percent from the three and 52 percent from the free throw line.

The Wildcats are now 6-2 in Big Sky Conference play and 14-5 overall on the season. The Wildcats return home to host Northern Colorado and North Dakota.
