Weber State takes down New Mexico 75-67 in WBI

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – For the first time since 1982-83 the Wildcats picked up a post season tournament win, other than the Big Sky Tournament, by taking down New Mexico 75-67 Wednesday night.
"We challenged them in the last time out with five minutes left to come up with every rebound and conitnue to control our offense, which was crucial at the end," head coach Bethann Ord said. "They were bigger and stronger but we had a great game plan and even though it was a quick turnaround the girls stepped up and focused on what we can control."
Weber State started the game off slow trailing the Lobos 4-8 and only shooting 1-6 over a two minute span. Weber State went on a 4-0 run that tied the game up with four minutes left in the first quarter. New Mexico claimed an 18-14 lead going into the second.
The Lobos started the second quarter with a 10-5 run. Weber State kept the score within five throughtout the quarter and only trailed 36-31 going into half time.
Weber State came out of half time hot going on an 11-5 run that gave them a 42-41 lead. The first Wildcat lead of the game. Weber State kept rolling with an 8-2 run while New Mexico shot 1-7.
The Lobos were on a 6-0 run going into the fourth quarter but the Wildcats still had a 55-53 lead. New Mexico had the momentum early in the fourth quarter and tied the game up at 57-57 with seven minutes left in the game.
The Wildcats pushed and went on a late run in the fourth quarter to solidify the 75-67 win over the Lobos.
Weber State was led by Deeshyra Thomas who had 20 points. Emily Drake had 15 points for the Wildcats while, Kailie Quinn and Brittney Dunbar each added 14 points.
Weber State shot 45 percent from the field, 39 percent fom the field and 57 percent from the free throw line. New Mexico shot 73 percent from the field, 23 percent from the three and 61 percent from the free throw line. Weber State only had six turnovers on the game. The Lobos out rebounded the Wildcats 40-37.
Weber State is now 21-11 overall on the season. Weber State will advance to the second round of the WBI tournament and will play the winner of North Dakota and Grand Canyon.
