Former Weber State women's golf standout Kelsey Chugg reached the final hole of the championship match in an attempt to defend her title at the USGA Women's Mid-Amateur Championship before falling short to Shannon Johnson by a 1-up score.

Chugg held a 1-up lead with three holes to play, but Johnson, who hails from Norton, Mass., birdied the two of the final three holes to take the title. Johnson's birdie on the par-4 16th hole at Norwood Hills Country Club evened the match, and she closed out the win with another birdie on the par-5 finishing hole.

Over the 18 holes, Chugg carded four birdies against a single bogey, recording a 3-under-par 69 for the round.

Chugg earned the No. 11 seed in match play after shooting consecutive scores of 75 in the two rounds of stroke play to tie for 10th. After a pair of comfortable wins in the opening two rounds of match play, Chugg was pushed to the brink in the round of 16 and needed 19 holes to finally defeat Julia Potter-Bobb.

In the quarterfinals, Chugg downed Meghan Stasi 3 & 2, before advancing back to the championship match with a 2 & 1 victory over Gretchen Johnson in the tournament semifinals.

Chugg earned the 2017 US Women's Mid-Amateur title by defeating Mary Jane Hiestand at Champions Golf Club in Houston, Tex.
