Kris van Wyk of the Weber State men's tennis team had the opportunity to play at the ITA Masters tournament played in Malibu, Calif.Â
"It was a huge honor to even be invited to play in this tournament," Director of Tennis Brad Ferreira said. "Some of the best collegiate players in the nation were invited to compete and Kris held his own. I'm really proud of the way he played."
Van Wyk played two singles matches. In the opening round, he took on Hady Habib from Texas A&M. Habib was fresh off a tennis tour and van Wyk competed very well, he ultimately fell 6-1, 6-2 to Habib.
"In his first match, Kris played some great tennis," Ferreira said. "The match was a lot closer then the scores showed."Â
In his consolation match, van Wyk took on Zdenek Derkas from Fresno State. Again, van Wyk put up a strong performance falling just 6-4, 6-4.Â
"Derkas is one of the top players from the mountain west region," Ferreira said. "Kris played a good match, he just came up a little short."Â
Van Wyk and the rest of the Wildcats will be back in action this weekend as thy compete in the Idaho State fall tournament.Â
