Wildcats Stumble Against Vandals

1/26/2023 2:32:00 PM | Women's Basketball

OGDEN, Utah. – The Weber State Wildcat women's basketball team returned to The Dee Events Center in front of the largest crowd of the season in a 66-52 loss to the Idaho Vandals on Thursday afternoon.

It was a slow start for the Wildcats in the first quarter who trailed 16-10 at the end of the period. Aaliyah Ellis led the team with two field goals and four points through the first.

Weber State's all-conference performer, Daryn Hickok, stole an Idaho pass with just seconds remaining in the first half and took it coast-to-coast for a layup to finish out the quarter. The Wildcats trailed by 10 at halftime but got a taste of things to come with Hickok's buzzer beater.

Hickok and Ava Williams each scored four points in the third quarter, but the big moment of the period happened right as the horn sounded to end the period. With just over a second left and the Wildcats inbounding on the baseline underneath the Vandals' basket, the ball was inbounded to Laura Taylor who heaved a three-quarter court shot and splashed it as the buzzer rang throughout the Dee Events Center for what was perhaps the highlight of the season. The Wildcats trailed by 14 going to the final frame.

The Wildcats stayed level with Idaho throughout the fourth quarter, but were unable to deliver a knockout blow and turn the tides of the game. The Vandals ended the afternoon with a 66-52 victory over WSU.
