Payge Walz Earns Big Sky Freshman of the Year

Payge Walz has been chosen as the 2023 Big Sky Track and Field Women's Freshman of the year based on her performance at the Big Sky Championships last weekend in Greeley, CO. 
 
Coach Paul Pilkington applauded Payge for her top point contribution to the team score, personally earning 14 points through individual competition's and earning another 5 as a member of the fourth-place finishing 4x100 team.
 
Payge earned all-conference honors in the 100-meter hurdles by finishing third and improving on her personal best with a time of 13.58 which gives her sole possession of the #4 WSU all-time rank.
 
In the 100-meter dash, Payge finished sixth with a time of 11.73 which is also #4 on the WSU all-time list. 
 
Her last scoring event came in the Heptathlon where she finished fourth with a score of 4710, which improves on her WSU rank. Payge performed well in several events with first place finishes coming in the 100-meter hurdles, the 200-meter dash, and the long jump.
 
Payge has been a consistent performer throughout the season and has improved her personal bests in several events along the way. Payge came just four spots short of qualifying for the NCAA West Regional meet in Sacramento with just six Freshman qualifying in the 100 hurdles.
