Wildcats picked fourth in Big Sky preseason coaches poll

Weber State opens fall camp on August 2. Season opener is August 31 against Central Washington.
SPOKANE, Wash. - The preseason polls are out and Weber State football has been picked to finish fourth in the coaches poll for the the 2023 season. The 'Cats were picked sixth in the media poll. The polls were released Monday as part of the Big Sky Kickoff in Spokane, Washington.Â
The Wildcats are coming off a 10-win season last year and advanced to the second round of the FCS Playoffs. It was the eighth-straight winning season for the Wildcats.Â
New this year, the Wildcats will be under the direction of new head coach Mickey Mental who became the 12th head coach in WSU history in December. Mental was the offensive coordinator for the Wildcats last season.Â
Montana State was picked to finish first in both polls. The Bobcats advanced to the semifinals of the FCS Playoffs last year. MSU garnered 10 of 12 first-place votes in the coaches poll and had 26 first-place votes in the media poll.Â
UC Davis was selected second in the coaches poll, followed by Sacramento State, Weber State, Idaho and Montana. In the media poll, Idaho was ranked second, followed by Montana, Sacramento State, UC Davis, and Weber State.Â
WSU returns four players that earned All-America honors last season and eight players that earned All-Big Sky honors.Â
Winston Reid was named the Big Sky Preseason Defensive MVP and Maxwell Anderson, Noah Atagi, and Abraham Williams all received presesaosn All-Big Sky honors.Â
Weber State opens fall camp on Wednesday, August 2 with the season opener set for Thursday, August 31 against Central Washington. Â
Stewart Stadium is getting an upgrade for the 2023 season. The east stands of the stadium are being completely rebuilt to enhance the fan gameday experience. In addition, a new field and new track will be installed prior to the season.Â
The east stands will not be open for the season opener on August 31 but will be ready for the September 23 game against Montana State, the Big Sky opener.Â
