David Tensmeyer

David K. Tensmeyer, M.D.
Team Physician, Family Practitioner


Dr. Tensmeyer is a board-certified Family Medicine physician, recognized by the American Board of Family Practice, with an additional Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in Zoology from Weber State University in 1976, followed by his medical degree from the University of Utah School of Medicine in 1981. Dr. Tensmeyer completed his residency through the University of Utah-affiliated hospitals and the McKay-Dee Family Practice Residency Program, where he served as Chief Resident in 1984.

Since 1984, Dr. Tensmeyer has practiced family medicine, including obstetrics, in the Layton and Ogden areas. His academic contributions include serving as a Clinical Instructor (1984-1990) and Assistant Professor (1990-1992) with the University of Utah Department of Family and Preventive Medicine. Additionally, he has been part-time faculty with the McKay-Dee Family Practice Residency Program since 1992.

Dr. Tensmeyer has held several leadership roles, including Assistant Chief (1989-1992) and Chief (1989-1992) of the Family Practice Department at McKay-Dee Hospital. He has also been a member of the Board of Directors for the Utah Academy of Family Physicians (1995-1998), the Collegium Aesculapium (1999-2002), and the Utah Affiliate of the American Diabetes Association (1989-1995).

As a team physician for Weber State University athletics since 1984, Dr. Tensmeyer has provided medical care for the football, men’s and women’s basketball, and women’s volleyball teams. He served as the Big Sky Basketball Tournament physician from 2015 to 2020 and provided medical coverage for the NCAA Basketball Championships' first and second rounds at WSU's Dee Events Center in 1986 and 1994.

In addition to his sports medicine work, Dr. Tensmeyer has been a physician for Camp UTADA and FCYD, camps for children and youth with diabetes, since 1980.

He retired from his office practice in 1999, but continues to work with Weber State, teaching in the McKay-Dee Family Practice Residency program, and work at volunteer clinics seeing patients in the underserved population of Weber and Davis counties.

Dr. Tensmeyer was honored as the 2024 Weber County Doctor of the Year and later named the 2024 Utah Medical Association Doctor of the Year.
