Mary Kay Amicone
- Induction:
- 2026
Softball head coach - 2014-24
Mary Kay Amicone transformed the Wildcat softball program and left an unmatched legacy in Weber State and Big Sky Conference history.Â
Amicone, a former Wildcat player, was the head coach at Weber State for 11 seasons from 2014-24, and guided the Wildcats to 10 Big Sky Championships, four NCAA Tournament appearances, and the first NCAA regional win in conference history.Â
She is Weber State’s and the Big Sky’s all-time leader in wins and in overall winning percentage.
In her time with the Wildcats, Amicone recorded 297 wins, six Big Sky regular-season titles, and four tournament championships. Her 2022 squad set multiple school and conference records, tying the program record for victories (38), earning the Big Sky's first-ever No. 3 seed in NCAA regional play, and notching a historic win over Texas A&M. That year, Amicone was named Big Sky Coach of the Year for the third straight season and the fourth time in her career.
Under her leadership, the Wildcats had four Player of the Year winners and earned 81 all-conference honors.Â
Amicone began her affiliation with Weber State as a player on the softball team from 1980-81, then played two more seasons at the University of Utah, where she earned All-America honors.Â
She then began a legendary coaching career across several schools throughout the state of Utah. Across her career, Amicone accumulated more than 800 career victories as a head coach at Weber State, Salt Lake Community College, and BYU. She launched BYU's softball program in 2000, leading the Cougars to a Mountain West Championship and earning Mountain West Coach of the Year honors in 2001. At SLCC, she won 430 games, claimed seven conference titles, and made three NJCAA national championship appearances.
Amicone also became the first female head coach of a Utah high school boys baseball team at Jordan High, and earlier won a Class 5A state softball title at Bingham High.Â
She and her husband, Marc Amicone, longtime president and general manager of the Salt Lake Bees, have two sons, Trevor and Derek. The Amicones remain deeply woven into Utah's baseball and softball community.
She was inducted into the Utah Sports Hall of Fame in 2025. In April 2026, the softball complex at Weber State was renamed Mary Kay Amicone Field at Miller Park in her honor.Â
