Men’s Basketball head coach - 2006-22

In 2006, Randy Rahe became a head coach for the first time when he was named the new head leader of the Weber State men’s basketball program. Over the next 16 years, he made history and left a lasting legacy in Wildcat Basketball.

After several years as an assistant, including time at Colorado State, Utah State, and Utah, Rahe was hired in March 2006 as the ninth head coach in Weber State’s history.

In his 16-year career as head coach from 2006-22, Rahe became Weber State’s and the Big Sky’s all-time leader in wins and games coached. He won 316 games with the Wildcats and led Weber State to five Big Sky regular season titles, three trips to the NCAA Tournament, was named Big Sky Coach of the Year a record four times, and recruited and coached some of the best Wildcats of all-time.

He still ranks first in school and Big Sky history with 507 games and 316 wins. He also holds the conference record with 198 Big Sky wins.

He coached six players to Big Sky MVP honors, and coached three players who were drafted in the NBA Draft. Among the recruits and players coached was NBA superstar Damian Lillard, who was twice named conference MVP and earned All-America honors in 2012. Lillard is a nine-time NBA All-Star and was named to the NBA 75th Anniversary team. He is now Weber State Basketball’s General Manager.

Rahe also coached Joel Bolomboy to Big Sky MVP honors and recruited and coached Dillon Jones, who later was a Big Sky MVP and was drafted in the first round of the NBA Draft.

A native of Bancroft, Iowa, Rahe spent more than 35 years coaching college basketball, with stops at Colorado College, Colorado, Denver, Colorado State, Utah State, and Utah, prior to coming to Weber State.

In his first season at Weber State in 2006-07, with only a few returning players, Rahe led the Wildcats to a memorable Big Sky Championship run and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. David Patten won Big Sky MVP honors that season, and Rahe was named Big Sky Coach of the Year.

He also guided the Wildcats to back-to-back Big Sky regular season titles in 2009 and 2010. Kellen McCoy and Lillard were named Big Sky MVPs those seasons.

The ‘Cats won the regular season and tournament titles in 2014 and again advanced to the NCAA Tournament, led by Davion Berry, who earned Big Sky MVP honors.

With Bolomboy as MVP in 2016, Weber State again won the regular season and tournament titles and a trip to the NCAAs.

Rahe had winning seasons in 14 of the 16 seasons, and his Wildcat teams won 20 or more games nine times and advanced to national postseason play nine times. He guided the Wildcats to 25 wins in 2011-12, 26 wins in 2015-16, and a school-record 30 wins in the 2012-13 season.

The Wildcats finished in the top three in the Big Sky standings in 13 of Rahe's 16 seasons at Weber State. WSU also won at least 10 Big Sky games in 14 of its 16 seasons.

He coached 41 players to All-Big Sky honors. He also coached four of the top five career scorers in WSU history, with Jerrick Harding and Jeremy Senglin first and second, and Lillard and Jones fourth and fifth.
