OGDEN, Utah - Street and Smith's publications has published a specialty magazine, ranking the 100 greatest men's college basketball programs of all time. The publication arrived in the mail and newsstands throughout the country on Tuesday, January 25, 2005.
Weber State was ranked 51st by the publication. The one page article entitled “The Original Small School Power” was written by Travis Clemens. Clemens is a former co-sports editor of the Weber State Signpost. It details WSU's rise from a junior college to four-year status. Quoting from the magazine. ... “WSU is a basketball school, the definition of a mid-major. It's only been a four-year, NCAA school since 1962; prior to that it was a junior college. It didn't even become a university until 1990. ... The Wildcat tradition comes from great coaches capable of getting incredible results from players they were able to bring to the small school.”
“The Weber State University men's basketball program has a proud and storied tradition of excellence,” said WSU athletic director, William J. Weidner. “This outstanding achievement of being recognized as one of the top 100 NCAA Division I men's basketball programs of all time, is a fitting and well deserved tribute to all of the many outstanding student-athletes, coaches and support staff personnel who have contributed to this tremendous legacy.”
The state of Utah was well represented in the piece. The University of Utah was ranked 11th, Brigham Young University was 36th and Utah State University was 82nd. The only other Big Sky Conference school listed was Idaho State. The Bengals came in 73rd. Former Big Sky Conference member, Gonzaga (1963-78), was ranked 89th.
“Obviously this is a big honor for our school and program,” said WSU head men's basketball coach, Joe Cravens. “There are a lot of schools listed below us that have had great traditions, coaches and players. To be included with them is a great honor, let alone be ranked above them. This was a well done magazine. It took someone, or probably a lot of people, a lot of time to research out the information and I would have bought it even if we were not in there. If you are a college basketball junkie, then this magazine is for you.”
