OGDEN, Utah - Lining up against the Big Sky's best, the Wildcats didn't back down.
Unfortunately for the Weber State University women's volleyball team, it wasn't enough.
Defending Big Sky Conference tournament champion Northern Colorado rallied from a first-set deficit to escape Swenson Gym with a 3-1 victory (19-25, 25-10, 25-18, 25-18) over Weber State on Friday night.
It was the Big Sky opener for both teams.
"That's a good, good team we just played," Weber State coach Al Givens said. "I liked the intensity and energy that we started the match with."
Sophomore right side hitter Bethany Wray had 15 kills and hit .294 with five service aces and three digs. Redshirt-freshman Shanae Langston had seven kills, including a five in the first set on 10 attempts. Senior setter Kim Lissinna had 20 assists, six digs and a pair of service aces, while junior libero Nina Blake had 11 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Carissa Noble continued her torrid blocking pace, with two solo blocks and two block assists, giving her 18 blocks in the Wildcats' past five matches.
Weber State roared out in the first set, claiming the six-point with 12 kills and just two errors on 29 attacks. Northern Colorado answered back with a decisive second-set win to even the match up.
The third and four sets were both extremely competitive until the Bears pulled away late both times.
Weber State fell to 0-1 in Big Sky play, 2-10 overall. Northern Colorado improves to 1-0, 10-3.
The Wildcats host Northern Arizona at 7 p.m. on Saturday at Swenson Gym.
