SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Wildcats gave an inspired effort, but came up just short on Friday night.
Led by 12 kills from Kayla Beal, Sacramento State defeated the Weber State University women's volleyball team 25-12, 27-25, 29-27 at the Hornet's Nest.
Sophomore outside hitter Briana Wilms led Weber State with eight kills, while junior middle blocker Dama Cox had seven kills for the Wildcats (2-10 Big Sky, 2-22 overall).
Sophomore outside hitter Piper Wahlin added six kills and eight digs for Weber State.
After the Hornets took a decisive first set victory, the Wildcats battled fiercely over the final two sets against one of the league's top teams.
There were four lead changes and 12 ties in the second set, which Sacramento State won 27-25.
The third set was even more competitive, featuring 17 ties and nine lead changes.
Weber State will return to action on Monday, stepping briefly out of Big Sky Conference action, to host in-state rival Southern Utah at 6 p.m. at Swenson Gym. The match kicks off a three-match home stand for the Wildcats.
