The Wildcats fell short in their season opener at BYU on Friday afternoon, 80-55. BYU pulled away midway through the first half and went on a quick run to start the second half leading to a 21-point lead at one point.
The Wildcats fought back, however, to cut the lead to single digits several times in the second half, but BYU's pressure defense and length was too much in the end leading to the 25-point BYU win.
The Wildcats actually outrebounded the Cougars, 42-36 but BYU outscored Weber State in the paint, 30-22.
Regina Okoye led the Wildcats with 14 points while Kalie Matthews worked hard on the boards to lead all rebounders in the game with 12. Matthews also added 11 points for the Wildcats, but Weber State's scoring output was deep on Friday with Jalen Carpenter scoring eight points and Desiree Ramos adding eight more points of her own.
BYU's Lexi Eaton led all scorers with 24 points, going 9-of-16 from the field. Kim Beeston added 13 points for the Cougars.
Weber State turned the ball over 27 times and the Cougars capitalized, scoring 26 points off those turnovers in the game. BYU was 7-of-18 from three-point range while the Wildcats were only 1-of-3.
Weber State ended up shooting 41.5 percent from the field in the game while BYU shot 49.2 percent.
The Wildcats will hit the hardwood again on Thursday night, November 15, when they welcome Boise State to the Dee Events Center for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
