The Weber State women's basketball team lost a tough battle with Portland State on Saturday, 74-60.

The Wildcats played their best basketball of the season for the first 30 minutes of the game, but a 17-0 run for the Vikings midway through the second half led to the Portland State win.

Jalen Carpenter had her best game of the season with 24 points and 14 rebounds. The double-double was her second of the season. Carpenter went for 14 points and 11 rebounds against Utah.

Sixteen of her twenty-four points were scored in the first half to lead the Wildcats to a two-point halftime lead. That was the Wildcats' first halftime lead of the season. That lead increased to as much as six points before the Vikings climbed back into the game.

From the ten-minute mark to the 3:19 mark in the second half the Wildcats went scoreless while the Vikings went on their 17-0 run to widen their lead to 14 at 68-54. By then, it was too late for the Wildcats to recover.

The game was fought heavily in the trenches with both teams scoring 38 points in the paint. The Wildcats' bench dominated, outscoring Portland State's 18-4.

Both teams had 24 turnovers in the game, but Portland State shot 50.9 percent to Weber State's 39.3 percent. The Wildcats improved from the free throw line, shooting 80 percent from the stripe. That included Brittney Newcomb's 8-for-8 performance at the line.

Newcomb finished the game with ten points as did Brianna Averette. The Wildcats finished the game with 15 steals, a season-high.

The Vikings were led by center Angela Misa who finished with 24 points to tie Carpenter for the game-high. Portland State also had three others in double-digits. Forward Mikaela Rivard added 15, while guard Allison Greene had 14 points and forward Kate Lanz finished with 11.

Weber State will enjoy the holiday season before returning to the court on January 3 when they travel to Northern Colorado for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
