Wildcat volleyball comes up short against Aggies

OGDEN, Utah – The Wildcats' return home was anything but sweet.
Squaring off with in-state rival Utah State on Tuesday night at Swenson Gym, the Weber State University women's volleyball team simply overwhelmed by the Aggies in a straight set, 25-19, 25-12, 25-18 loss.
Utah State, which improved to 5-2, hit .416 and won nearly every phase of play against the Wildcats. Weber State dropped to 3-6 with its sixth straight setback.
The Aggies had 47 kills to just 29 for the Wildcats, who hit just .099, and outblocked WSU 10-3.
Sophomore outside hitter Samantha Staker led the Wildcats with eight kills, while hitting .353, while sophomore outside hitter Rebecca Fuchs added seven kills.
Sophomore setter Whitney Hunt had 20 assists and junior libero McKay Tarbox had 13 digs.
Weber State got off to a solid start in the opening set, taking a 3-1 lead on a kill by Fuchs, but Utah State used a 6-0 spurt to take the lead and held it the rest of the way in taking a 1-0 lead in the match.
The second set was fairly tight early, with Staker making it 13-10, but Utah State scored 12 of the final 14 points of the set to win by 13 and take a 2-0 lead.
Looking to stave off defeat in the third set, Weber State fell behind 7-2, but rallied to take a 13-12 lead and led 16-15 on a kill by Fuchs, but another large run – this time 10-2 – pushed Utah State to the sweep.
Weber State will be back in action this weekend when they head to Philadelphia, Penn., to take part in the five-team Crowne Plaza Philadelphia West Tournament on Saturday and Sunday.
