Cats drop Big Sky opener at Eastern Washington

The Weber State women's basketball team suffered its third consecutive close loss, this time at Eastern Washington by the score of 78-67.

Spurred on by a 20-2 run halfway through the first half that put them on top by 11, the Wildcats led for the majority of the half. Eastern Washington, however, ended the half on an 8-0 run to pull to within four points at the break.

Sophomore guard Desiree Ramos led the Cats with 20 points, going 6-of-14 from the floor and 3-of-6 from three-point range.

Senior forward Amanda Hughes finished with 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

The Eagles ended the game on an 11-3 run to pull away from what was a close game until late.

Eastern Washington was led by sophomore guard Hayley Hodgins who scored 22 points to lead all scorers. Junior guard Lexie Nelson added 21 points while senior center Laura Hughes turned in a 17-point performance.

Weber State outshot the Eagles, 45 percent to 42 percent, going 25-of-56 from the floor.

Eastern Washington outscored the Wildcats in the paint, 28-18, but Weber State's bench outscored Eastern Washington's 31-12. The Cats were outrebounded in the game, 40-30.

Weber State was 7-of-12 from behind the arc in the game.

The Wildcats will finish up the road trip on Saturday with a 3 p.m. matchup at Portland State. Then the Cats will return home for the first time in nearly a month when they host Northern Colorado on Thursday, January 9, at noon for Field Trip Day.
