OGDEN, Utah – The Weber State women's volleyball team had a rare Monday evening match tonight. The Wildcats faced off against Grand Canyon University for only the fourth time in school history. The Wildcats looked to end their road trip on a high note but were unable to put the Antelopes away in the fifth set as they lost 25-22, 24-26, 25-20, 16-25, 18-16.
The loss drops the Wildcats record to 6-21 overall, 2-10 in Big Sky Conference play.
“It was a very competitive match on both sides,” Wildcats head coach Tom Peterson said. “When we were in system, we were really looking good. But they played really good defense and were able to get their hands on a lot of hits. We just need to keep learning.”
Audrey Biggs finished the match with 26 kills and hit .306. Amanda Varley tied a career-high with her 14 kills while Samantha Staker reached double digits in kills for the third time this season with 10. Staker also added 10 digs for her second double-double of the season.
Taylor Christensen had her third career double-double with a match-high 56 assists and 11 digs. That is the 17th time she has had over 30 assists in a match this season. Megan Thompson just missed her first career double-double with eight kills and a season-high nine blocks.
McKay Tarbox had one of her best games in a Wildcat uniform with a season-high 35 digs. That is the third most in a single game in Wildcat history and she now owns two of the top three performances ever. Tarbox now has 397 digs for the season, which puts her ninth on the individual single-season records for digs.
The Wildcats dominated the Antelopes in almost every major category. They had more kills, blocks, digs and higher hitting percentage.
But were once again plagued by their own mistakes in the key moments. The Wildcats had 12 service errors compared to six for the Antelopes.
The Wildcats will now play three of their final four matches at home. They will host Sacramento State on November 6th at Swenson Gym. First serve is set for 7p.m.
