OGDEN, Utah – Former Weber State track and field All-American Brett Hales participated in the Xterra Trail Run World Championships this past Sunday. The 21-kilometer race has held on Kualoa Ranch, Oahu, Hawaii. Hales faced competition from 40 different states and 20 countries.

Hales finished second with a time of 1:19:47, three minutes behind the two-time defending champion Patrick Smyth of Salt Lake City, Utah.

Hales qualified for the championships after winning the XTERRA Trail Run National Championship title in September when he took first in a race held at Snowbasin. Earlier this year, he qualified for the 2016 Olympic Trials in the marathon by running 1:04.31 in the Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon in Las Vegas.

He earned his only All-American honor in 2011 placing fifth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase.
