Late Viking rally dooms the Cats in 62-60 loss

The Weber State women's basketball team fell just short of its fourth victory in its last six games, losing at home in the closing seconds to Portland State, 62-60.

The Wildcats had the ball in a tie game with 35 seconds left when head coach Bethann Ord called a timeout. The Wildcats had a good look, but Lariel Powell of Portland State stole the ball from Jalen Carpenter.

That gave the Vikings a chance to have the last shot with 20 seconds left. Guard Kate Lanz drove to the rim as the clock ticked down. Putting up a shot with four seconds left, Lanz was fouled leading to two free throws which put Portland State ahead, 62-60.

The two-point lead held when freshman guard Deeshyra Thomas drove the length of the court and got an obstructed look at the hoop from the top of the key. Thomas' shot fell short and so did the hopes of the Wildcats for their fourth win in six games.

Carpenter led the Wildcats with 16 points while three other Wildcats finished in double figures. Thomas had 11 points on the night while both Amanda Hughes and Regina Okoye added 10.

Weber State struggled on the boards, pulling down only 29 rebounds. Portland State won the rebounding battle, 34-29.

The Wildcats took care of the ball much better than Portland State did, turning it over half as much as the Vikings did. Weber State turned it over 13 times to Portland State's 26. That led to a 27-19 advantage for the Cats in points off of turnovers.

Weber State also held an edge in the paint where it outscored PSU, 28-20.

A big difference, however, came at the free throw line where Portland State made five more free throws than the Wildcats took. Portland State was 21-for-28 from the line while the Wildcats were just 12-for-16.

Weber State will play its final game of the 2013-14 season on Saturday against Eastern Washington when the Eagles come to town for a 2 p.m. tipoff. Admission to that game is free for all. It will be Senior Night at the Dee Events Center as the Wildcats will honor their only senior, Amanda Hughes, before the game.
