OGDEN, Utah – A tenacious and spirited competitor during her four years with the Wildcats, Amanda Hughes made sure that she finished her final collegiate game with the same amount of energy.
Hughes splashed in a game-high 21 points and pulled down eight rebounds on Saturday afternoon for the Weber State University women's basketball team, which wrapped up its 2013-14 season with a 68-60 loss to Eastern Washington at the Dee Events Center.
Hughes, who overcame an injury-plagued season a year ago that forced her to miss nearly all of what would have been her senior year, hit 6-of-12 shots from the field and converted 7-of-10 free throws in 30 minutes before leaving to an ovation from the crowd in the final seconds.
Hughes finished with 978 career points, converting 40.2 percent of her shots from the field and 71.0 percent from the free-throw line, and pulled down 603 career rebounds. She finished her senior year as the leading scorer and rebounder on the team with 12.8 points and 5.8 rebounds per outing. She also leaves as the Big Sky Conference's single-game record holder for pulling down 24 rebounds during a Feb. 11, 2012 contest against Northern Arizona.
Sophomore guard Regina Okoye added 14 points and six rebounds on Saturday for the Wildcats, who finished their third season under head coach Bethann Ord with a 7-22 overall mark (3-17 Big Sky).
The game ultimately came down to the free throw line where the Eagles missed just one of 21 attempts, while the Wildcats were just 16-for-26.
Weber State out rebounded Eastern Washington (16-13 overall, 12-8 Big Sky) 37-35, and held advantages in points in the paint, point off turnovers, second chance points, fast break points, and bench points.
