LARAMIE, Wyoming – The Wildcats came up short twice on Saturday, dropping their final two matches of the UniWyo Wyoming Invitational.
The Weber State University women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to Wyoming (25-21, 25-20, 25-11) to open the day's action, and then fell in straight sets to Gonzaga (25-22, 25-15, 25-22) to wrap up the two-day, three-match tournament.
The Wildcats were without the services of senior outside hitter Audrey Biggs after sustaining an ankle injury in the game against Furman. But in her absence, freshman outside hitter Amanda Varley lead the team in kills during both of their matches.
“I do feel that our level of play in has risen signicantly in the last few weeks,” WSU head coach Tom Peterson said. “We again played competitevelty for severeal sets in each match. But having Biggs out hurt us a little because we weren't use to some of the line-ups we were using.”
Against the Cowgirls, Varley led the Wildcats with eight kills and junior outside hitter Samantha Staker added seven, but Weber State managed just 32 kills in the match. Redshirt Freshman Taylor Christensen had 23 assists, 4 kills and 5 digs.
Against the Bulldogs, Varley had 9 kills while sophomore outside hitter Ciera Borho had 7 kills and 2 blocks. Christensen had 28 assists and 3 kills while freshmen libero Thamires Cavalcanti had a team-high 8 digs.
At the conclusion of the tournament, Varley was named as a part of the All-Tournament team. During the three matches, she had 29 kills and 9 blocks.
The Wildcats fell to 2-8 with the losses.
The Wildcats will back in action next weekend as they travel to Lubbock, Texas to participate in the Lone Star Showdown. The three-match tournament will begin on Friday, September 19th.
