Weber State Athletics has announced changes to its radio broadcasts. After serving as the voice of the Wildcats for 18 years, Carl Arky is leaving Weber State to pursue other professional opportunities. Weber State has named Steve Klauke the new voice of Weber State Athletics. Klauke will call all WSU football and men's basketball games. In addition, David Patten will serve as the color commentator for WSU men's basketball games.
Taking over the duties as the play-by-play voice of Weber State is Steve Klauke, a veteran in the Utah sports media market. He has filled in on several Weber State games in the past. Klauke has served as the voice of the Salt Lake Bees since the organization begin in 1994. He has also filled in on broadcasts for the Utah Jazz. A native of Chicago, Klauke came to Utah in 1991 and was a part of pre and post-game shows for the Jazz radio broadcasts.
He is a two-time Utah Sportscaster of the Year, winning the award in 1995 and 2014. He was also honored in 2014 as the minor league baseball National Broadcaster of the Year by Ballpark Digest. Klauke has also done multiple telecasts for Weber State, the Big Sky Tournament and Utah high school state championships in football and basketball.
“Having filled in for Carl in the past, I'm really looking forward to the opportunity to be more involved in Wildcat Athletics,” Klauke said. “Carl did a great job for so many years and I'm excited to take the purple baton from him.”
David Patten, a former Big Sky MVP, will join Klauke for color commentary for all WSU home basketball games and select road games. Patten, who played at Weber State from 2004-07 was named the Big Sky Conference MVP in 2007, the first year of Randy Rahe as head coach of the Wildcats. That year Patten led the Wildcat to the conference title and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. He played in 78 career games with the Wildcats and was named to the Weber State 50th Anniversary Team.
Carl Arky leaves Weber State after calling over 700 WSU football and men's basketball games over the last 18 years. Arky has seen the Wildcat men's basketball team win six Big Sky Championships and make six trips to the NCAA Tournament , in addition to two trips by the Wildcat football team to the FCS Playoffs. His last game was WSU's overtime win at Montana, their first win in Missoula in 28 years.
“In 1998, I landed my dream job as the voice of the Weber State Wildcats,” Arky said. “At the time, I could not imagine all of the great games and great players I would have the privilege of watching from my front row seat over the next 17 years. While I'm giving up that seat a bit sooner than I had hoped or expected, I am so grateful for the opportunity Weber State University has given me. WSU became my “home” and I was honored to be part of a special family. It's been an amazing ride. As the autumn winds of change blow me back East for my next great adventure, I leave feeling lucky and blessed. I have to thank all of the great coaches and athletic directors I have worked with, everyone on staff in the athletic department (especially Brad Larsen, Paul Grua and Kerri Robinson), the Webb family at 1430 KLO, the great fans who make up our Wildcat nation and especially the players who have given us so many memorable moments. I'll carry those memories with me and will always be a Wildcat at heart. No one will be cheering louder or be more proud than old Wildcat Carl. Thanks for your time, this time, till next time.”
All Wildcat games will continue to air on 1430 KLO as well as streamed online at kloradio.com and WeberStateSports.com.
