OGDEN, Utah – Weber State volleyball struggled to find momentum in the third set and fell to in-state rival Southern Utah in three sets.

"Good things happen when you can focus on the right stuff," head coach Jeremiah Larsen said. "I'm happy with what we did in the third set. We were disciplined and we did what we needed to do. I will give SUU credit because they played a really good match."

The Wildcats fell behind 11-5 early in the first set and were only able to score seven more points before the T-Birds claimed the set 25-12. Amanda Varley and Megan Thompson each had two kills for the set high for the Wildcats. Both Weber State and Southern Utah had two team blocks in the first set.

Weber State kept the score within two for the first half of the set but couldn't find enough footing to take the lead. The set ended with a kill by SUU's Madi Forsythe for a final score of 25-15. Freshman Andrea Hale led the second set with five kills and a .214 percentage. The Wildcats trailed by two sets going into the break.

The third set started in favor of the Wildcats with a block by Thompson and Samantha Staker and an ace by Thamires Cavalcanti and a kill by Varley. The biggest lead either team had in the second set was by two points. The Wildcats took a 19-17 lead but the T-Birds tied it at 19-19 before a Wildcat error and T-Bird block gave SUU a 21-19 lead. The T-Birds took advantage of a little cushion room and claimed the third and final set 25-20.

Weber State was led by Hale who had nine kills and 29 attacks. Varley added six kills for the Wildcats. Defensively the 'Cats had nine team blocks and 39 digs. Thompson led the Wildcats with five blocks.

The Wildcats drop to 5-18 overall on the season 1-10. The Wildcats will take on Northern Arizona Saturday Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. in the Swenson Gym before hitting the road for the last time this season to take on Portland State and Sacramento State.
