Wildcats take down Denver 61-49, start season 2-0

DENVER, Colo – Weber State women's basketball took down Denver University Sunday afternoon with a 61-49 score.
"This was a great road win for our team," head coach Bethann Ord said. "It was a quick turnaround which really challenged our ability to prepare and I felt our players did a fantastic job of being ready to go. Denver is a good team and made us really work against their zone. Our kids were unselfish and played hard. I'm very proud of them."
Weber State had a five point lead with help from a steal by Regina Okoye and easy layup that ended the first quarter with a score of 11-6.
Kailie Quinn had had two three-pointers in the second quarter which helped the Wildcats control most of the second quarter. Weber State had a 30-20 lead going into the halftime break.
Both teams started the third quarter with a 3:04 scoring drought. Quinn scored an easy layup to put the Wildcats on the board for the first time in the quarter. A three pointer from freshman Emily Drake ended the third quarter on a high note for WSU.
The Wildcats started the fourth quarter with a 46-32 lead but the Pioneers went on a 10-0 run to bring the score within four points. Okoye sunk a pair of free throws to end the Wildcats five minute scoring drought. Weber State then went on a 9-4 run to maintain the lead that took them to the 61-49 victory.
In the last three minutes of the game Weber State held Denver to a single free throw.
Weber State was led by Quinn with 18 points including four three pointers and went 7-10 from the field. Okoye followed close behind with 17 points and she added three steals. Freshman Tyschal Blake had the game high of 10 rebounds. Brittney Dunbar led the day with four steals.
Weber State shot 43.4 percent from the field and 58.3 percent from the free throw line while Denver shot 34.5 percent from the field and only 40 percent from the free throw line. Denver had 14 turnovers to Weber State's 16.
The Wildcats are now 2-0 on the season. They will next take on College of Charleston Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 7:00 p.m. at the Dee Events Center. WSU will next hit the road for five consecutive games traveling to Cal State Fullerton, University of Portland and a tournament at North Texas. The Wildcats will start Big Sky Conference play against Idaho State Jan. 2.
