CEDAR CITY, Utah – Weber State University's women's basketball team took down the Southern Utah Thunderbirds for the second time this season with a final score of 50-48.

During the first half of the game both teams stayed within three points of each other. The Wildcats had a 26-23 lead going into halftime. Weber State started the second half with a 6-2 run.  

Weber State maintained a four point lead until the T-Birds brought it within in one point with 5:12 remaining in the game. The game was tied 43-43 with 2:40 left in the game. The game remained tied until the Wildcats took a two point lead with one minute left. They maintained that lead to end the game 50-48.

"It was a extremely physical game," Head Coach Bethann Ord said. "The girls kept their heads up and kept playing. The leadership really came out from our seniors tonight. Those three really pushed it and helped keep our team going."

Junior Jalen Carpenter led the Wildcats with 17 points and nine rebounds. Senior Carlee Lough added 11 points including three from beyond the arc. Lough also had a career high of three steals. Regina Okoye also added six points for the Wildcats and three steals.

Weber State shot 34.5 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from the three and 36 percent from the free throw line. Weber State pulled down 44 rebounds to SUU's 43. The T-Birds had 20 turnovers to the Wildcats 18. 

"Today we battled," Lough said. "Out of the four years that I've been here this team has the biggest heart and it was that heart that kept us strong tonight."

SUU had two players in double figures. Brenna Gates led the T-Birds with 14 points. Desiree Jackson had 12 points. The T-Birds shot 34.4 from the field, 13.3 from the three and 50 percent from the free throw line.

"We talk about taking it one game at a time but we just keep focusing on the task at hand and playing in the now and it works for us," Ord said. 

The Wildcats are now 6-6 in Big Sky Conference and 11-12 overall on the season. Weber State continues the road trip by heading to Northern Arizona to play Saturday at 2 p.m. The last home games of the season will be Thursday February 19 against Montana State and Saturday February 21 against Montana for senior night.
