David Johnson

Men's Basketball (1978-80)

Inducted February 2004

David Johnson was the second-leading scorer on Weber State's nationally ranked basketball squad that won 70 games over three seasons, claiming three Big Sky Conference championships.

Johnson, who averaged nearly 15 points per game in his career, started and played in 91 of 92 games during his sophomore, junior and senior seasons.

As a freshman, the 6-foot-6 Johnson, played a total of seven varsity games, but was the top scorer for the junior varsity with a 22.3 points per game average.

Over the next three seasons, Johnson grew to 6-9, and his career grew as well. His career went from the backcourt to the frontline, and was an excellent shooter at either level. Johnson was a prep standout at Del Oro High School at Loomis, California, where he learned all-league and All-Northern California honors. He was the leading scorer his senior season at close to 27 points per game.

Johnson came into his own as a sophomore at Weber State, when he became a starter, hitting 52 percent from the field and 75 percent from the free throw line. He hit the 20-point plateau five times, with a high of 23 points.

Johnston's career percentage from the field (.514) shows he shot the ball with authority. He may have been slender, but that didn't stop Johnson from being a tough defender and inside offensive threat.

Johnson held the dubious distinction of leading the Wildcats in personal fouls as a sophomore, with 107 in 29 games. As a junior, he also was called for 107 fouls.

He was a two-time All-Big Sky Conference First Team honoree in 1979 and 1980. Johnson was drafted by the Dallas Mavericks in the 1980 NBA Draft, going in the fourth round. He still sits on the WSU career record list, ranking seventh in career scoring (1,369 points) and 13th in rebounding (557).
