Mac Madsen guided the Weber State men's golf program for 32 seasons, making him the longest tenured coach ever at WSU. Coach Madsen created the golf program from its beginnings to one that reached national stature.
Madsen's coaching career concluded after the 1996-97 season. He was also instrumental in the start-up of the WSU tennis program.
Madsen's golf squads captured 15 Big Sky Conference championships, including an unprecedented 12 titles in a row, The 12 consecutive conference crowns in a row is a Big Sky record in any sport.
The Wildcats made 12 team appearances and three individual appearances in the NCAA National Golf Championship, placing as high as 12th in 1982. In 1995, the Wildcats placed second after winning Big Sky championships in 1993 and 1994.
Madsen was accorded 15 Big Sky Coach of the Year awards. In 1986, he was named the NCAA District Seven Coach of the Year.
Madsen's program produced three PGA Tour players, a Walker Cup performer and more than a dozen All-Americans.
In addition to his coaching duties, Madsen was actively involved in other aspects of collegiate golf. He served on the 15-man Division I ranking committee. He was the 1996 and 1997 chair of the District Seven Golf Advisory Committee. He also served as chair of the Legislation Committee of Golf Coaches of America.
