Football (1989-92)

Inducted January 2000

Weber State's standout quarterback in the early 1990s, Jamie Martin helped rewrite the school record books and bring national recognition to the Wildcats program.

Martin, a 6-foot-4, 200-pound quarterback from Arroyo Grande, California, was named NCAA Division I-AA All-American following the 1990 season. He was named the 1991 winner of the Walter Payton award, which signifies the outstanding football player in all of Division I-AA. Martin later played in the Coaches All-American Game in 1993, as well as the 1993 Hula Bowl.

Martin was drafted by the St. Louis Rams in 1993, and went on to a lengthy NFL career with several teams.

As a Wildcat, Martin was named Big Sky Conference player of the week six times. He was named All-Big Sky Conference quarterback in 1990 and 1991, and named the league's outstanding offensive player of the year as well.

When he graduated, Martin owned 14 Big Sky single-game, season and career passing records.

Martin owns many of the Weber State records in total offense for a career, season and game.

In 41 games, -- 36 straight as a starter -- Martin established himself as the fifth all-time leading total offense (12,287 yards) and passing (12,207 yards) leader in the entire history of collegiate football, in any or all divisions.

Martin set the NCAA Division I-AA single game records

On Dec. 15, 1991, Martin, accompanied by his mother Cindi, accepted the Walter Payton Trophy in New York City.

“It's a great honor for me and a great honor for my teammates,” Martin said that day.

His coach, Dave Arslanian, said: “I think we've developed a pretty high-powered, highly proficient offensive system. To really work at the optimum level like we've taken it to, it takes the ultimate quarterback in Jamie.”

Martin played in the World League of American Football in 1995, piloting the Amsterdam Admirals. He later played for the Jacksonville Jaguars, the St. Louis Rams and Washington Redskins.

In 2014, Martin was named the 9th greatest athlete in Big Sky Conference history.
