Stan Mayhew

Men's Basketball (1976-77)

Inducted February 2005

For just one season, Stay Mayhew was one of the most dominant forces to every play basketball at Weber State and in the Big Sky Conference. He led the Wildcats and the Big Sky in scoring with 59 (22.0 points per game), and averaged 10.2 rebounds per contest. The 593 points is the eighth-best season scoring mark in WSU history. He shot 52 percent from the field and 82 percent from the free throw line. He set the school single-game free throw record with a 14 of 14 effort versus Montana State.

In one of the most famous games in WSU men's basketball history, Mayhew exploded for 45 points and 20 rebounds in an 89-76 home-court victory over in-state rival Utah State. Those 45 points are still a single-game record for WSU and the eighth-best mark in Big Sky history.

Mayhew was named All-Big Sky Conference First Team, and also earned a spot on the Big Sky postseason all-tournament team. He helped the Wildcats post a 20-8 overall record and a second-place finish in the league standings.

A native of Washington D.C., Mayhew enrolled at North Carolina Central in Durham, N.C., where he was recruited by former Boston Celtics star Sam Jones. After one season, he left to attend Trinidad (Colorado) Junior College, where he played two seasons before coming to WSU.

Mayhew spent 15 season playing professional basketball in Europe, with stops in Belgium, Italy, Spain, France and Israel. Upon his return to the United States in 1992, he began working in the automobile business in Bellevue, Washington. He owns a BMW dealership in Eugene, Oregon. He is married to Chris Hayward-Mayhew, and has a daughter, Clarice, and son, John.
