Scott Shields

Football (1995-1998)

Inducted October 2010

Dubbed “Mr. Versatile,” Scott Shields contributed in so many ways to the Weber State football program.

He capped his career by being named the 1998 National All-Purpose Player of the Year in the NCAA Division I-AA ranks by The Sports Network and was a consensus First Team All-America selection as a free safety following his senior season.

Shields, a 6-foot-5, 225-pound standout from San Diego, California, was one of only three players in Big Sky Conference football history to earn All-Big Sky Conference First Team honors for four straight seasons. He finished his career with the Big Sky and WSU leader in interceptions with 23. He tied the WSU single-season record with 10 interceptions in 1996.

As a placekicker, Shields became the Weber State career scoring leader with 325 points, good for ninth all-time in the Big Sky Conference at the time. He is WSU's career leader in made field goals with 67, fifth all-time in the Big Sky. He holds the WSU single-game field goals record with five against Northern Arizona (1997); his longest field goal, of 55 yards, was kicked against Eastern Washington on Nov. 14, 1998. His career field goal percentage at WSU was .744.

Shields ranks fourth in WSU's all-time punting annals in yards per punt average (41.91 yards per kick), and owns several of the school's longest kicks through the years, topped by an 82-yarder against Cal State Northridge in 1996.

Shields was drafted in the second round of the NFL draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers, and played for three seasons for the Steelers. He later played for the Scottish Claymores (2002) in NFL Europe, and finished up his pro career in 2004 with the Kansas City Chiefs.

In 2014, Shields was named the 27th greatest athlete in Big Sky Conference history.
