Matthew Godfrey earned All-America honors in 1994 at the NCAA Track and Field Championship, and was a talented distance runner for Coach Chick Hislop's Wildcats in the early 1990s.

Godfrey, an Ogden native, was an All-American in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. He was the 1995 Big Sky Conference indoor champion in the mile run, and the 1995 outdoor champion in the 1,500 meters. Godfrey was a three-time all-conference performer in the mile run, as well as a two-time all-conference contributor in the distance medley relay. Godfrey earned three All-Big Sky honors in the outdoor 1,500 meters.

Along the way, Godfrey was a four-time Academic All-Conference honoree in cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field. In 1994, Godfrey was named to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Academic All-America Team.

Godfrey has been successful in his business and political career, serving as Ogden City Mayor for several terms.

Godfrey signed out of Weber High School, after winning the state 4A 1,600 and 3,200 events as a senior.

After a successful freshman season, Godfrey left to serve an LDS Church mission. After returning, he sat out the 1991-92 season to prepare for the rest of his running career. He helped Hislop win his first Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship, a feat they repeated the next season.
