Mike Gove

Men's Golf (1975-78)

Inducted February 1991

Mike Gove played golf at Weber State during the school's impressive run of success in the mid-1970s. During his college career, Gove led the Wildcats to impressive heights, and went on to enjoy an outstanding amateur and pro career as well.

Gove came to Weber State from Seattle, Washington, and helped the Wildcats win a pair of Big Sky Conference championships in 1977 and 1978. Gove was named First Team All-American by Golf World Magazine in 1978, as well as First Team All-American by the NCAA Golf Coaches Association.

Under Coach Mac Madsen, Gove was the medalist at the Big Sky tournament in 1977 and helped the 'Cats to the team titles in 1977 and 1978. Gove earned medalist honors at the 1978 Sun Bowl Tournament, and finished fourth at the 1978 NCAA Golf Championships to cap his collegiate career.

Gove represented the United States as a member of the 1978 Walker Cup Team. He later became a member of the PGA Tour, and played in the 1980 Masters tournament.

“The Masters probably has bigger impact at the clubs I've worked at and amongst golfers,” Gove said when interviewed by the Big Sky Conference recently. “But when you look at the opportunity to represent your country and hear your national anthem, well you hear Olympic athletes, and even some great NBA stars that played in the Olympics talk about that being something that sticks. It's hard for me to say which one was bigger, but I'd probably say the Walker Cup.”

Gove worked for years as the head pro at Astoria Golf and Country Club in Oregon, then as the head pro at Inglewood Golf Club in Kenmore, Washington.

In 2014, Gove was named the 32nd greatest athlete in Big Sky Conference history.
