Dick Motta built the Weber State basketball program to national prominence spanning the junior college and four-year ranks. In eight years, the inventive Motta achieved several notable marks before moving on to an NBA coaching career than eventually landed him in the Basketball Hall of Fame.
Motta served as the head coach at Weber Junior College from 1960 to 1962, establishing a 44-17 record. As Weber transitioned into a state college, Motta and the Wildcats picked it up a notch, winning 120 games while losing 33, a sterling .784 winning percentage.
While at Weber State, Motta guided the Wildcats to the Big Sky Conference Championships in 1965, 1966 ad 1968, and helped the 'Cats make their first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament, in 1968.
During his college coaching tenure, he averaged 23 wins per year over eight seasons.
Motta began coaching the Chicago Bulls in 1971. He won NBA Coach of the Year honors.
As a coach of the Washington Bullets, Motta guided the franchise to the NBA Championship in 1978.
