Farley Gerber
Men's Cross Country, Men's Track and Field (1979-1984)
Inducted January 1994
One of the top distance runners in the collegiate ranks in the early 1980s, Farley Gerber gained acclaim as one of Weber State's first and greatest steeplechasers. In 2013, he was named the 21st greatest athlete in Big Sky Conference history.
Gerber came to Weber State from South Jordan, Utah, and by the time his career at WSU was over, he had earned 12 varsity letters competing in cross country, indoor track as well as outdoor track and field.
Gerber, the former Bingham high standout, was the 1984 Big Sky Conference champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. That year, he won in 8:19.27, setting a Weber State, Big Sky and American college record.
Gerber earned NCAA All-America honors in the steeplechase in 1983 and 1984. He held eight Weber State records in indoor and outdoor track when he graduated. Two marks, his time of 8:10.48 in the 3,000 meters (1983) and 8:19.27 in the steeplechase (1984 NCAA finals) are still Big Sky records.
During his career, Geber won four Big Sky Conference individual titles. He was the only native Utahn who attended a Utah college to break the four-minute mile barrier. He is also one of four native Utahns to have won a NCAA track championship.
Gerber's performance at the NCAA championship meet was named the 20th greatest moment in Big Sky Conference history.
“Holding that record for this long is gratifying,” Gerber told the Big Sky Conference. “But at the same time I would expect or hope that some of these young guys would come up and take care of that.”
Later that year, Gerber finished fourth at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, just missing out on a chance to compete in the Los Angeles Games. Injuries force him to retire a couple of years later.
