Weber State falls in five to Montana State

10/5/2017 10:09:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

OGDEN - Weber State volleyball had its first five set match in home territory and despite several career high Wildcat performances fell to Montana State with set scores of 25-23, 23-25, 25-18, 23-25 and 12-15.

"Montana State played a wonderful match," said head coach Jeremiah Larsen. "MSU attacked us and made us make adjustments which we did poorly. I'm disappointed in the mental effort of our girls. We'll go back to work tomorrow and hopefully have a better result against Montana."

In the first set, Weber State had a slow start as Montana State took off with an 8-4 lead. Weber State went to work and tied things up at 11-11. WSU took the momentum and turned it into an 18-13 lead with a 7-2 run.

MSU answered back with a 6-1 run to reclaim the lead. The two teams battled with a tie score until WSU score three consecutive points to take the game to set point. With a 24-22 score the Bobcats found a kill but WSU answered with a kill from Andrea Hale to take the first game 25-23.

The two teams started off the second set with a deja vu feeling as they were tied 11-11. Weber State and Montana State stayed tied until the end of the match with a score of 22-22. MSU ended up capturing the second set 25-23.

Both teams were tied at one set a piece going into the break.

The Wildcats captured the momentum midway through the third set going on a 9-2 run to capture a 20-13 lead over the Bobcats. WSU had a 24-14 lead over MSU but the Wildcats allowed the Bobcats to go on a 4-0 run before a kill by Megan Gnieting pushed Weber State to the 25-18 third set win.

Montana State fought hard in the fourth set and as the two teams remained close for the majority of the set, MSU pulled out a 25-23 win to force the match to go into five sets.

Despite four different tied scores in the fifth set, the Wildcats never managed to capture the lead and Montana State pulled out the 15-12 fifth set win and Weber State fell in the overall match three sets to two.

Weber State's offensive efforts were led by Hale who posted 23 kills from 50 attacks with only four errors for a .380 percentage. Hale's 23 kills earned her a new career high. Amanda Varley had her fifth double-double on the season with her 16 kills and 11 digs on the night. Gnieting also posted double digit kills with 11.

Ashlyn Power rounded out the Wildcats offensive efforts with a new career high of 52 assists. This was Power's first time breaching 50 or more assists.

Defensively, several Wildcats put up solid numbers. There were four Wildcats to post double digit digs, including Varley's 11. WSU was led by Power who had 16 digs for her sixth double-double on the season. Thamires Cavalcanti recorded 15 and Katelyn Erwin had 10.
As for power on the net, Varley and Gracey Tuifua each recorded five blocks for the Wildcats while Hannah Hill-DeYoung was close with four.

Weber State had 63 total kills on the night from 170 attacks with 26 errors for a .218 percentage. Montana State had 68 total kills from 186 attacks with 27 errors for a .220 percentage. WSU had 75 digs to MSU's 66 and both teams recorded 12 team blocks.
