OGDEN – Weber State brought back many former Wildcat greats to participate in the men's basketball Alumni Classic this weekend, but the night belong to one all-time great.
The highlight of the night was the retiring of jersey No. 1 for Damian Lillard. The two-time NBA All-Star with the Portland Trail Blazers had his jersey retired at halftime of the alumni game. He also participated in the shooting stars contest and coached in the game.
"It was a really special moment," Lillard said. "It was a great feeling to be able to do it in front of all my people and all the people who played a part in this even being able to happen."
Lillard was influential in helping organize another Weber State Men's Basketball Classic. Many former Wildcats attended and 28 players participated in the alumni game, including four former Big Sky MVP's.
The Alumni White team picked up a 74-53 win in the alumni game, led by Lewis Lofton who had game-highs of 17 points and nine rebounds, and knocked down five 3-pointers. Davion Berry, the 2014 Big Sky MVP, had 10 points and Nic Sparrow added seven for the white squad.
The team in black was led by Jimmy DeGraffenried and Dan Henry who each had nine points. DeGraffenried knocked down three 3-pointers and had five rebounds. Steve Panos and Shawn Moore each had eight points.
The night started with the shooting stars contest which was won by the team of Nic Sparrow, Frank Otis and Lewis Lofton. Davion Berry won the 3-point contest, narrowly defeating Jimmy DeGraffenried.
The game included players from five different decades, including the oldest player, Jimmy Watts, age 64, who played with Weber State from 1973-76.
Also returning were former Wildcat coaches Phil Johnson, Ron Abegglen and Joe Cravens. They joined current Wildcat head coach Randy Rahe, Lillard and Joel Bolomboy as coaches.
