Wildcat season lives on with 66-56 win over TSU

Weber State women's basketball season lives on as they defeated Texas Southern University 66-56 Thursday night.

"Hard fought road battle and in tournament time it's do or die for both teams," said head coach Bethann Ord. "Texas Southern did a great job battling to end. Survive and advance and we live to play another day."

Things between the two teams started out pretty evenly being tied at 13-13 with just over a minute left in the first quarter. TSU drained a three pointer in the final minute to take a 16-13 lead over the Wildcats at the end of quarter one.

TSU jumped to a 21-16 lead to start the second quarter off but Weber State answered with a 5-0 run to tie the game back up 21-21. The Lady Tigers rocked a 7-0 run answered by a Wildcat 12-0 run to take a 36-31 lead at half time.

Within the first four minutes of the second half, TSU tied everything back up 38-38 with a 7-2 run. Things went back to being tight between the two times for the rest of the the third quarter and by the end of third quarter the Lady Tigers snagged a small 48-46 lead going into the final quarter of play.

The fourth quarter was definitely the grand finale for the Wildcats. They finished the game on a 15-2 run and held the Lady Tigers to just eight points in the final quarter. Larryn Brooks drained a deep three in the final five seconds of the game to solidify WSU's 66-56 victory.

Weber State was led by Brooks who dropped 26 points, 20 of which occured in the first half. Emily Drake was the only other Wildcat to put up double figures as she dropped an even 10.

Kailie Quinn and Dominique Williams were also influential contributors as they each added eight points to WSU's efforts.

Jaiamoni Welch-Coleman had a new career high of nine assists on the night.

Weber State shot 43 percent from the field, 42 percent from the three. WSU had 36 total rebounds, 19 assists and seven steals.

The Lady Tigers shot 36 percent from the field, 35 percent from the three and 80 percent from the free throw line. TSU had 35 total rebounds, eight assists and 12 steals.

Weber State is now 21-10 overall on the season aand will next travel to Conway, Ark. to take on the Sugar Bears of the University of Central Arkansas Monday, March 19 at 6:00 p.m.
