Wildcats fall 113-109 in OT to Bengals in Reno

RENO, Nev. – Weber State women's basketball fell to Idaho State 113-109 in overtime in the quarterfinal round of the Big Sky Conference tournament Wednesday afternoon, despite strong offensive performances from four different Wildcats.

In the first quarter, WSU started out with a 7-2 run. Weber State continued to push and jumped out to a solid eight point lead. Idaho State rallied with a late 7-2 run and WSU was on the verge of a two minute scoring drought when Larryn Brooks drove to the basket and snapped both ISU's momentum and the WSU drought.

Weber State ended the first quarter on a 7-0 run and had a 29-19 lead over Idaho State going into the second quarter. Emily Drake had 22 points going into the half.

Things escalated quickly in the second quarter. WSU went on consecutive 5-0 spurts throughout the second quarter that gave Weber State a 55-34 lead going into half time.

Late in the third quarter the Bengals found some momentum with a 7-0 run and they held the Wildcats to a three minute scoring drought. Idaho State won the third quarter out scoring Weber State 27-18. The Wildcats managed to keep a strong 73-61 after three quarters of play.

The Bengals grabbed an early 7-1 run in the fourth quarter that brought the score within five. With 1:21 left on the clock, Idaho State stole the lead from Weber State for the first time in the game and the score was 93-92. The final minute was back and forth but by the time clock hit zero, ISU and WSU were tied 98-98 and things were headed into overtime.

Overtime started with a made three all by Drake to start the Wildcats off but it wasn't enough as Idaho State came up with an 11-4 run to end overtime and run away with a 113-109 victory over Weber State.

Weber State was led by Jaiamoni Welch-Coleman who dropped a new career high of 33 points. She also had the game high of six assists. Drake ended the afternoon with 31 points, a new career high. She also broke 1,000 career points early in the first quarter with her performance.

Brooks had 21 points for WSU and Jocelyn Adams had a double-double with 12 points and the game high of 13 rebounds.

Weber State finished the game shooting 52 percent from the field, 43 percent from the three and 76 percent from the free throw line.

The Wildcats and Bengals broke the Big Sky Tournament record for most points scored in a tournament game. The previous record was 102.

Idaho State finished the game shooting 50 percent from the field, 43 percent from the three and 95 percent from the free throw line. The Bengals were 21-22 from the line. WSU out rebounded ISU 42-38.

Weber State finished the season with a 20-10 overall record.

  • The point total of 232 blows by the previous mark of 197 in Eastern Washington's 100-97 win over Sac State in the 2016 league tournament. 
 
  • Weber State's Emily Drake's seven 3-pointers is the second most in a tournament game behind Mikayla Ferenz of Idaho, who hit eight in the 2016 tournament. 
   
  • Weber State's 55 points in the first half tied the championship record set by Montana State in 1991.
