Wildcats sweep Utah State 3-0

The Weber State volleyball team continued its in-state week with another win over a Utah school as the Wildcats swept Utah State 3-0 Friday night in Logan.

The win moves the Wildcats to 5-3 on the season and is the second-straight in-state win after the 'Cats beat Utah Valley 3-2 on Tuesday.

The Wildcats will close out the in-state season and non-conference schedule with another in-state match as they host BYU Saturday at 2 p.m. The Cougars are currently ranked first in the nation.

In Friday's win, the 'Cats beat the Aggies 25-21, 25-17, 25-21. In the first set the Wildcats jumped out to a 17-11 lead before an Aggie run made it 22-20. WSU closed out the set with three of four points to seal the win.

WSU never trailed in the second set then trailed 11-10 in the third set before a 7-1 Wildcat run gave Weber State a 17-12 lead. The 'Cats clinched the sweep with back-to-back kills by Andrea Hale and Megan Gneiting. It was WSU's first 3-0 win of the season.

The Wildcats hit .337 with 45 kills as a team, compared to a .176 percentage for Utah State. Gneiting led the way with 14 kills and hit a season-best .444, to go along with four digs and three blocks.

Hale added 11 kills, seven digs and two blocks and Helena Khouri had a career-high 16 digs.

"Tonight was a good night for us," said WSU head coach Jeremiah Larsen. "Utah State has smacked us around the last two years and I'm happy for our women. We knew it wasn't going to be easy, but we played composed and consistent volleyball, which has been our goal since day one this season. We still need to get better as we get ready for conference."

The win was Weber State's first against Utah State since 2008 and was the first 3-0 sweep of the Aggies since 1997.

After eight games on the road, the Wildcats will finally get a home match, hosting No. 1 BYU Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Swenson Gym.
