Weber State falls 62-58 to Southern Utah in Big Sky Tournament

BOISE, ID – Weber State women's basketball 2019-20 season has come to an end with a 68-52 loss to Southern Utah in the opening round of the Big Sky Tournament. 

What head coach Velaida Harris said: "I'm proud of my team's effort. I think you guys could see from the stands the energy and the camaraderie that this group has. It would be tough for any other team, with a record such as ours, but it's a testament to the kids we have and who we are trying to become as a team. It was our game to be had. Down the stretch you could see the kids keep fighting. I'm really proud of these women."


How it happened: Weber State started the game by jumping out to an 8-3 lead early in the first quarter. SUU then went on a 7-2 run to tie the game up at 10-10. WSU pushed on and took an 18-14 lead as the quarter ended. 

 The second quarter started out with a two minute scoring drought by both teams. Daryn Hickok ended the drought with a made jumper in the paint. Hickok drew the and one on the play to give WSU a nine point lead.  Late in the second quarter, SUU went on a 6-0 run to trail 30-29 with one minute. 

Ashley Thoms sunk a deep jumper as the buzzer sounded to end the half giving Weber State a 32-29 lead at the half.  

Weber State shot 55 percent during the first half going 15-27 from the field. 

Southern Utah came out of the half and tied up the game at 38-38. Weber State then went on a three minute scoring drought and SUU went on for a 43-38 lead. 

In the fourth quarter, WSU struggled to find the basket while Southern Utah consistently chipped away to get ahead. Heading into the final minute of play, SUU had a five point lead over WSU. 

 Weber State came back with free throws and a banked three pointer by Kayla Watkins to trail 
60-58. The T-Birds ended up making a couple a free throws as the game concluded to take a 62-58 win over the Wildcats. 

 Leaders: Weber State had three Wildcats score in double figures. Kayla Watkins led the way with 23 points. Liz Graves and Daryn Hickok both had 11 points for WSU. Jadyn Matthews led the way on the boards pulling down 12 on the night. 

Comparison: Weber State shot 43 percent from the field, 22 percent from the three and 71 percent from the free throw line. WSU pulled down 38 total boards and came away with 10 assists, six steals and 30 turnovers. WSU had 34 points in the paint, 15 off of turnovers, and 12 from second chances. 

SUU shot 38 percent from the field, 21 percent from the three and 65 percent from the free throw line. The T-Birds pulled down 27 total boards and had eight assists, 13 steals and 14 turnovers. 

Southern Utah had 30 points in the paint, 19 off of turnovers and eight second chances. 

Notes to know: Weber State's season concluded with a 4-26 overall record and 2-18 in the Big Sky.
