Wildcats Sweep 'Jacks, Play for Conference Title on Saturday

11/11/2021 8:34:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

In one of its biggest matches of the season and a match that carried enormous Big Sky Conference implications, Weber State Volleyball came through clutch with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-22) win against a tough, talented Northern Arizona team.

Although the match was a sweep, things weren't ever easy for the Wildcats. Weber State grabbed the lead in the first set and wouldn't ever falter, but NAU always kept things close. As would be a narrative throughout the match, Weber State won the error margin by six points, and won the first set 25-23 to take control of the match.

The following set was the largest score discrepancy of the night and WSU never trailed. Behind a spread out offensive attack and playing terrifically in the serve receive, the 'Cats controlled the set from the get go and won it 25-17.

NAU never goes down without a fight, and the third set proved that. The Lumberjacks fought hard and there were 11 ties and five lead changes throughout the set. Despite having three players reach double digit kills in the match, the 'Jacks made too many errors (22 on the evening), and Weber State punished NAU by winning the third and final set of the night.

"I thought we executed the gameplan for the first time in a long time both offensively and defensively," head coach Jeremiah Larsen stated after the match. That game plan paved the way for Rylin Adams to lead the team with 10 kills for the match, while Emma Mangum gathered eight kills on 18 swings.

Larsen praised his pin hitters and said, "Rylin and Emma did a really nice job at taking what the block was giving them. I was excited for Dani Nay and I thought she fought well."

Another standout effort from the match was Makayla Sorensen who had 26 digs, 20 receptions and no reception errors.

Perhaps the most impressive note of the evening is that in the third set, Ashlyn Power became the Big Sky Conference's record holder for most sets played in a career with 514. She currently ranks 20th in NCAA history in sets played, as well.

"Pretty impressive the things that she's been able to do," Larsen noted of his setter who has been a mainstay in the program. He affectionately continued, "I really appreciate my little reject," referring to how Power went extremely underrecruited out of high school.

With the win, Weber State jumped to 17-8 (12-3) on the season. More importantly, the Wildcats gave themselves a chance to play for at least a share of the Big Sky Conference regular season title on Saturday against Southern Utah.

If Weber State wins on Saturday, the Wildcats will clinch at least a share of the regular season conference title for the second consecutive year and will potentially be playing for the number one seed in the conference tournament.

Saturday's match will also honor the most decorated senior class in Weber State history, as Adams, Emily Olson, Power, and Sam Schiess will all be recognized for everything that they have done for the program and leading the Wildcats to their first conference title in over 30 seasons. The match against SUU will start at 2:00 on Saturday at Swenson Gym. Tickets can be purchased online or by calling Weber State's ticket office at 801-626-8500. The match will also be broadcasted on ESPN+.
