Wildcats Down Roadrunners, Advance to NIVC Second Round

12/3/2021 9:37:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

For the third consecutive season, Weber State Volleyball has won at least one match in national postseason tournament play as they beat the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners by a score of 3-1 (25-18, 25-22, 22-25, 25-21).

A balanced offense was a main story for the Wildcats on Friday night in Swenson Gym, and that balance started in the first set. Ashlyn Power dished out 12 dimes in the first and WSU won the set 25-18, and four 'Cats had at least three kills, led by Emma Mangum who had six.

The second set saw some stronger resistance from the Roadrunners, but the Wildcats ability to set multiple hitters still gave the team an edge that CSUB couldn't keep up with. After the end of the second set, Weber State had two players with eight kills, and five players with at least three. CSUB's block was on its heels and Weber State took advantage, giving the 'Cats a 25-22 set victory, and a 2-0 lead in the match.

Things started to get really interesting in the third set, however. CSUB clapped back with one of the more impressive sets of volleyball that the 'Cats have seen from their opposition in Swenson Gym this season. Led by nine third-set kills from Brooke Boiseau, Bakersfield maintained a lead for most of the third set and ended up taking the frame from the 'Cats, 25-22, to make it a 2-1 lead for Weber State.

In what ended up being another tight set between the two teams, Weber State got itself into a five-point deficit in the fourth set, forcing head coach Jeremiah Larsen to burn a timeout and get his team back on track.

And get back on track the Wildcats did.

Power, a Wildcat legend who has essentially rewritten Weber State and Big Sky Conference record books, took over from the service line.

The fluidity of the Weber State offense waned, but it didn't matter. When WSU needed to score in crunch time of a close, match-clinching set, Power went to work. With three aces from the superstar setter, including one on match point, the Wildcats closed things out and won the fourth set 25-21.

"Thank heavens she was able to be serving at the very end of the game when we needed her to," Larsen said of Power, who has become a staple at Swenson Gym. "She kind of took over set four with her serve to help us get a nice win."

Offensively, the Wildcats had a number of players with good nights, including Dani Nay who had 12 kills, Rylin Adams chipped in 11 kills of her own, and Mangum who finished the night with 10. Mangum also led the Wildcat block as she was a part of six stuffs.

Larsen went on to praise CSUB for a close fought match. "Bakersfield had played a wonderful game, had a good game plan and executed it very well. They played with a lot of energy and should be proud. We're fortunate to beat them."

The victory gives Weber State it's 21st win of the season, and it also gives the Wildcats the right to play against their Big Sky rivals, Portland State, on Saturday afternoon with a trip to the NIVC quarterfinals on the line.

On the Saturday afternoon matchup between the Wildcats and the Vikings, Larsen mentioned, "It's a shame that only one Big Sky team will get out of the second round because PSU is a wonderful volleyball team. We'll have to play a lot better than we did tonight to be able to compete with them."

Weber State beat Portland State 3-1 in Ogden earlier this year, but PSU returned the favor by taking down the Wildcats in Portland.

The rubber match between two of the best teams in the Big Sky will take place in Swenson Gym at 2:00 PM, and can be viewed on ESPN+. Tickets to the match can be purchased online or by calling the Weber State ticket office at 801-626-8500.
