Wildcats drop home opener 37-24 to James Madison

OGDEN - In a battle of top 10 ranked teams, No. 8 Weber State dropped its home opener 37-24 to No. 2 James Madison Saturday night at Stewart Stadium. 

How it happened 
The Wildcats scored first with a 36-yard field goal by Kyle Thompson on the first drive of the game, but it was all JMU after that. The Dukes added a field goal and a touchdown in the first quarter to lead 10-3. 

With 6:38 to play in the second quarter, the Wildcats were driving before a fumble was recovered by JMU's Josh Saratt and returned it 88-yards for a touchdown that made it 17-3. 

The Dukes added a touchdown early in the third quarter to extend the lead to 24-3. 

WSU scored its first touchdown when Creyton Cooper connected with Hayden Meacham for a 1-yard touchdown, that capped a 67-yard drive. 

The Dukes scored the next 13 points to lead 37-10 midway through the third quarter. 

Weber State added two late touchdowns as Kylan Weisser connected with Rashid Shaheded for a 27-yard touchdown, then Josh Davis added a two-yard TD run. 

Numbers to know
The Dukes had 359 yards, compared to 326 yards for Weber State. JMU rushed for 182 yards, compared to 92 for the Wildcats. WSU threw for 234 yards, while the Dukes had 177 yards passing. 

Randall Johnson started the game and was 6 of 13 passing for 69 yards. Kylan Weisser was 13 of 22 for 164 yards and one touchdown. 

Josh Davis totaled 59 yards and one touchdown. Rashid Shaheed had five catches for 77 yards and one touchdown to lead the Wildcats. Shaheed also had three kickoff returns for 80 yards. 

Defensively, Preston Smith and George Tarlas each had eight tackles to lead the way. Tarlas also had one forced fumble. 

The game was played in front of a crowd of 11,222 fans, the highest attendance at Stewart Stadium in seven years. 

Up next
Weber State will be back home next Saturday as the 'Cats open Big Sky play, hosting nationally-ranked UC Davis. Kickoff for the conference opener is at 6 p.m. It will also be televised on KJZZ and ESPN+.
