PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island – The Weber State women's basketball team got back to .500 on the young season with a 57-50 over the Bryant Bulldogs on Friday afternoon.
The Wildcats started the game with a 6-0 run that was punctuated by a Laura Taylor three pointer, but the good offense didn't stop there. After a couple of made layups and a jumper from Jadyn Matthews, Weber State's advantage grew to 13-4 at the end of the first quarter.
Matthews stayed hot in the second quarter and put on an absolute exhibition in Alumni Hall on the campus of Providence College. Her nine points led the Wildcats in the quarter and was a major reason for the Wildcat's 32-21 lead at the half. Matthews had 12 points and 10 rebounds after two quarters. The Wildcats held Bryant to just 7-28 shooting in the first half.
The Bulldogs made a third quarter run, however. Weber State's 11-point halftime advantage was nearly cut in half following the third, and the Wildcats carried a six-point lead to the fourth quarter.
In the final frame, the Wildcats turned to their all-conference star when they needed her most. The Bryant offense started to click and the Bulldogs had their best shooting quarter of the day, but Daryn Hickok and the Wildcats weren't having it. Hickok scored nine of her game-leading 19 points in the fourth quarter as the Wildcats were able to fend off the Bryant Bulldogs by a score of 57-50.
With the win, Weber State (2-2) gets back to .500 while Bryant falls to 2-4 on the year.
NOTABLES
-For the fourth consecutive game, Matthews led the team in rebounds (16).
-Hickok set a season-high in scoring with 19 points.
-Vicky Parra and Hickok each tallied three steals, Weber state had 11 as a team.
QUOTABLES
"I'm proud of the start that we had. Defensively, (we) really lucked out in the first quarter. That was our goal and intention coming into the game. We let up in the second quarter, but we were able to sustain it through the first half. It was important for both Monka and Jadyn to get going for us in the second. Bryant has a very good center (Mariona Planes Fortuny) so she was able to get her buckets and finishes, but we were able to neutralize everybody else. She had 32, but everyone else had zero points, two points, three points and maybe five points. We can't stop everything, but we did stop a lot. I am proud of our team for doing so. Our bench also gave us good minutes. Collectively (we were) at 11 steals. Jadyn having 16 boards and Monka having 19 points always helps us." - Velaida Harris
