Wildcats Hang Tight, Fall to Tournament Hosts

11/26/2022 6:37:00 PM | Women's Basketball

PROVIDENCE, R.I.– The Weber State women's basketball team fell to the Providence Friars on Saturday afternoon in Alumni Hall by a score of 62-55.

Laura Taylor's sharpshooting was a massive difference maker for the Wildcats in the first quarter. Taylor scored eight of her game-high 18 points in the first, including two three pointers. Weber State locked down an 18-13 lead to close out the opening frame.

A big momentum change in the second quarter swung things in way of the tournament host Providence Friars, however. The Friars outscored Weber State 20-9 in the second and nabbed the lead from the Wildcats to end the half.

The Wildcats fell behind by as much as 12 points in the third quarter, but another Taylor three pointer closed the gap to just four points with just over five and a half minutes remaining. Following a Providence free throw, a Daryn Hickok jumper closed the gap to just three points, but that was as close as the Wildcats would get. Providence had a 45-41 advantage to end the third quarter.

The Wildcats stayed close and competitive for the remainder of the game, the foul discrepancy between the two sides playing a major role in the outcome of Saturday's game. Weber State was called for 20 fouls compared to just six for Providence, and the Friars' free throw shooting helped them keep a lead over Weber State. Providence outscored Weber State 17-14 in the fourth and went on to clinch the seven point victory.
